Begin clean
Wash trays and tools before sowing. Use a fresh seed-starting medium that holds moisture without becoming waterlogged.
- Label every variety
- Record the sowing date
- Use clean trays
- Moisten the medium before planting
Moist—not soaked
Seeds need consistent moisture, but saturated media can limit oxygen and encourage disease. A covered tray can retain humidity during germination; uncover it once seedlings emerge.
Give seedlings light early
Move emerging seedlings under a suitable grow light promptly. Weak or distant light creates tall, thin plants. Gentle air movement also helps stems become stronger.
